Nova, has a bout of doubt on how to best use his newfound powers, he gets advice from the experts: Earth's Mightiest Heroes! Featuring Captain America, Thor, the Wasp, Luke Cage, She-Hulk and Iron Man!Book Avengers: Heroes Welcome #1 Review :
For a Free Day comic this is a pretty cool one geared towards kids. It sends a good message without white washing the bad things that happen.Nova is the main character. He's in high school and is assigned an essay that really gets under his skin. He goes to the Avengers for some help and advice. While I understand that comics are entertainment and have no obligation to be moral, or to teach, I always give ones that do a little extra credit. As entertainment comics sole job is to make money. However, I always find it refreshing and worthy when they use that entertainment to do something good. Whether it be for a person, or society, I don't care as long as it's for a purpose other than making money for another rich *******.This one gets special kudos, because not only did it provide a free comic to many kids who probably were never able to buy a comic in their life, but it also told a morally upright and socially responsible story.I can already hear the uptight fanbois complaining about no action, lame story, made for little kids, wah wah. News flash you can afford whatever comic you want - go buy it. But next time think about someone besides yourself. No, comics have no obligation to teach us anything. But when they do, it helps prove that not everyone is out for themselves, and sometimes even the big rich white guys sitting 100 stories up, understand that. Then again maybe it was just a rebel in the writers room, but regardless. Thank you. I was really, really impressed with this book. They're basically saying that, yeah, s*** happens and evil won't ever be eradicated, but you can set an example for others by just extending a helping hand when the opportunity arises. Everyone gets down on themselves from time to time, and all the bad in the world can weigh on you and make you lose hope.A hero is a leader. They're someone that sees something awful and takes action to make it right. They're the ones that stand strong and give others hope that things can change, and motivate others to get involved too. Of course there will be cynics trying to rain on the parade, but the second you listen to the naysayers, good loses. You don't have to run into a burning building to rescue someone. For example, I tell the kids to stand up for others at school and on the bus; to face bullies head on loudly and publicly, because that's how take the power back. All it takes is one person to set an example, and it paves the way for the more timid to do the same. It's called breaking the Bystander Effect, and I think it's important for everyone to understand what that means. If you haven't heard of it, the bystander effect is a strange, group psychological phenomenon where everyone just stands by and watches while something bad is happening, because every single one of them believes it's someone else's job to step in. It's because of this that when you have to do CPR, you point at one person out of the group and say "*You*--call 911." It breaks them out of bystander mode and forces them to take action.Anyway, it's a good comic for everyone, especially young kids. Like other reviewers have stated, there's like zero action, but crime fighting action wasn't the *point* of this one. Plus, it's free on Comixology (at least right now), so what are you complaining about? The message is important.
